Disappearing Crops!

This has been happening for quite some time now and now it's starting to bug me lol. I have a row of sugarcane that keeps just disappearing when I leave the area after planting. I know it is not a lighting issue because the lighting is uniform across all rows, and no other rows have problems. Also, it is right next to water so saturation isn't an issue either. I could be overlooking something really obvious, but in the meantime I have no idea how this is happening. I'll post pictures to show examples. (I planted some at the beginning to show which row)

I've seen that bug (at least I think it's a bug) in both singleplayer and multiplayer since around 1.4  I have no idea what's causing it :P
