Ghouls' Map Art Tutorial!

(1/1)

Miss_Ghouls:
-Ghouls' Poster Tutorial-

Since I made my first two maps, I've had a TON of people asking me just how i make them!
I'm going to warn you now, it's NOT easy, and will take a TON of materials!
But if you're still up to the task, here's how!

. : : || ================= || : : .
Size:
All maps are equal to 128 squares wide, by 128 squares long.
This is how big your art will have to be. Here's a blank white square that you can download
to use for your own art :D

To use it, just open it up in Paint, and press CTRL+G.
This will bring up a grid. You can zoom in as far as you can now, to see each pixel.
Now use the pen tool to draw your art -- but be aware, there are some things about
color you'll need to know first...

Color:

There are only so many colors that you can use on to make colors on a map.
Things like signs and glass won't show up, whereas blocks like logs and wood will
all show up as the same color (so if you run out of jungle planks, you can just use
birch instead without making a difference! :D)

These are the colors available. The picture on the left is how the colors will show
up on the map. The picture on the right is what the blocks are in-game. Using these,
you can make all kinds of awesome pixel-art! However, there aren't that many colors
to work with... This is where things get complicated :T

In order to make colors lighter or darker, you'll need to work in stairs.
Not craft-able stairs, but making angles out of them like this:

They'll show up like this on the map:

Facing the sunset (West)
- UP and LEFT to make a color LIGHTER.
- DOWN and LEFT to make a color DARKER.

Doing this, you'll get at least 3 shades of each color: Dark, Medium, and Light.

Now you have a bunch of new colors to work with! :D

Picking a Spot:

Making a map-poster takes a LOT of room. Like i said before, each one is 128 x 128.
(That's two stacks of blocks per row!  ??? )

Just for reference, here's how big a map will be! The little block in the middle,
is ONE dirt block!

So do your best to find an area where no one is going to build, like an ocean.
(Snowy forests and deserts might also be a good place, but make sure there's
no one around for MILES before you start building, so no one has a giant dark
square looming in the sky :C )

Now then, Make yourself an empty map. To do this, craft a compass:

then craft some paper:

and surround the compass:

Ta-da! :D Right-click to open it inside the area you want to build.

When you open it up, you'll see something like this:

Now you need to find your corners so you can start using your chart.
To do this, just use some dirt to pillar up, and then build out until you are
touching the corner. Keep checking your map (it takes a moment to update)
to make sure you're where you are supposed to be.

Once you find the corner, feel free to make a border
so you know where to work! :D

Go ahead and follow your chart now, and have fun! Just be sure to
follow Famcraft's rules, and don't build anything that will get you in trouble!

Copies & selling your maps:

If you would like to give away or sell your maps, it's very easy to do :)
First of all, make a bunch of empty maps (don't worry, they stack!).
DO NOT open them! Leave them empty!

Now, place your original map in a crafting table with your empty maps.
Take as many copied maps as you like!

Once you have all of your copies, make sure you keep at least ONE so you can make more.

To sell them, hold the map in your hand, and type "/ID"
It will give you a number like this: "358:1050"
(The WHOLE NUMBER is important, including everything after the : )

Now make a shop sign like you normally would, but put the number (358:10075, etc) on the bottom line.

When you exit to finish the sign, it will change and say "Map item". Your sign should now work! :D

If you guys have any questions, or need any help, be sure to ask me! (But do so here on the forums if you can, so i don't log in to 200 /mails :P) [/center]
