Info for Parents / Famcraft Tour? We missed it.
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:56:27 PM »
Perhaps you've heard that we try to offer every new player a staff-guided tour here at Famcraft. Sadly, once in a while someone slips through the cracks.

This often happens when a player is non-responsive to the staff team's offers of a tour. Sometimes it results from a new player joining when limited staff is on, or staff members are afk.

Regardless, we do offer a few ways for you and your child to review the tour information. The tour provides useful information about locations around the server, plugins and commands.

Here are some tour options to help you get caught up:

1.) Self-guided Tour:
https://famcraft.com/index.php/topic,1876.msg10988.html#msg10988

2.) In game, type /rulebooks Tour Guide for a written book with all the tour info.

3.) In game type /warp tour  for all the tour info on signs.

4.) Click here for a video tour.

Info for Parents / Minecraft is Just a Kid's Game.. Right?
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:48:42 PM »
Have you ever peeked over your child's shoulder as they contently place colorful blocks and wondered to yourself if an adult could get away with playing a game like that.. maybe just for a little bit?

 That's ridiculous!  :o

I mean, of course adults can play Minecraft!

Here on Famcraft we have players from about age 4 years old - 80+. Our community  is made up of kids and their friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, teachers and more! The staff team has all ages as well.

We even have a voice chat server where many of us hang out and chat about our current projects and latest builds.

Minecraft is not just a game you play and beat- then it's done and over with like so many games. Minecraft is an ongoing, never ending world where you create your own story.

Feel free to join your kids here on Famcraft. And if you don't have kids but you'd like to make some friends in a family friendly, drama-free environment, hop right in. We'd love to have you here.

Info for Parents / Is My Child Ready for Famcraft?
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:38:49 PM »
Are you debating if your child is ready for a multiplayer server? Do you keep putting it off because you're just not sure? Do you have questions, but you're not sure who to ask? Or  maybe you are not even sure WHAT to ask.
The purpose of this topic is to provide you with a little information and insight that might help make it easier for you to decide if now is the time to move to online multiplayer Minecraft.

1.) Is my child too young to play on Famcraft?

Only YOU can determine this. We have players as young as 4 years old who do just fine here with a little guidance from a parent or grandparent. As cliche as it may sound, no two kids are the same.

Does your child follow basic instructions well? Are they able to understand simple corrections?

Would they be able to understand when they see another "character" in an online multiplayer game, that they "character" is another real person, and their actions can effect one another in the game?

If you feel like your child is old enough to get the grasp of these basic concepts, then keep reading!
If your child is a bit off from being able to understand these things, then it might be best to let them explore in single player Minecraft for a bit longer.

2.) Will Famcraft go extra-easy on my child because they are young?

Simply put, no. We treat all players fairly and equally. We do not show favoritism or make exceptions to the rules for very young players. We expect everyone who joins the server to make a genuine effort to follow the rules. We do not collect the ages of our players anywhere. Even if we did, we would not ask the staff team to memorize players ages, and treat them differently based upon their age. We have had over 3000 join in just the past 6 months, so clearly, treating each player according to their age or anything else is simply not an option here.

3.) Will my child see a lot of swearing on Famcraft?

No- ideally your child will see absolutely no swearing on Famcraft. We are incredibly strict about the no swearing rule. We have staff on almost continually. Chat is closely watched and moderated. In the event someone does swear, they are promptly banned and the screen is cleared of the offending text.

4.) My child does not read or type yet. Can he/she still play on Famcraft?

Absolutely. Just keep in mind that not being able to read does not exempt them from the rules. We will count on you to go over the rules with your child and make sure they understand to follow them.
Players are not required to use chat or communicate with other players. They are welcome to play on Famcraft as if it is vanilla single player if they wish, as long as they are always respectful of other player's they might encounter
and the homes/areas of those players.

5.) What if my child breaks a rule?

They will be warned, kicked, muted or banned just like any other player would be.

6.) But my child is very sensitive to criticism or being corrected.

Again, all players are treated equally here. If your child becomes very upset or very defensive when corrected, that may be a factor to consider when deciding if they are ready for online multi-player games.

7.) What if my child needs help on the server?

The staff team can offer BASIC help, such as answering questions about plugins and commands. The staff team will NOT give your child free items, build a home for your child, play with your child or play the game for your child.
While we do offer a staff-guided tour to help new players get started on Famcraft, we do assume all players who join have some sense of how to play Minecraft, at least in single player.
We do not teach players to play the game. It will be your responsibility to show your child how to play Minecraft if they do not know.

8.) What if my child has not broken any rules, but clearly needs help from a parent?

If a player is behaving in a way that leads us to believe they need a parent present at the keyboard, we will try asking the child to go get a parent.
If the child does not understand, they will be "jailed" in a bright and friendly well-lit, mob-free area that looks like a playground. The area has signs clearly posted asking them to go get Mom or Dad.
Most of the time, even non-readers get tired of being unable to leave the area, and bring a parent to the computer to see what's up. At this point, a staff member will be able to speak with you and explain the situation so you will know how you can help your child on the server.

9.) What if my child is too young to understand how to use grief-prevention? Are other players allowed to break their house or take their items just because they do not have a protection field?

Absolutely not. Your child is protected by our very strict no griefing rules. If they find their home has been damaged just let a staff member know and we will fix it.

10.) What if my child breaks something that belongs to someone else?

If your child breaks something on accident, he can tell a staff member so we can help fix it. If your child breaks something that belongs to someone else on purpose, then they will likely be banned. Every block transaction on the server is logged and recorded making it very easy for us to tell which player has broken something.

11.) What if my child is very afraid of the Minecraft mobs.

There are mobs on the map. The map is set to normal difficulty. There is a small mob-free city where players are allowed to build.

12.) What if my child is very afraid of the dark/night time on Minecraft?

There are normal day and night cycles on the server. There are some areas that are always well lit and mob-free such as /spawn, /warp mall, and /warp farm. We do not turn it day upon player request.

13.) Does "multiplayer" mean my child will always have someone to play with?

No, it doesn't. We have all ages and all different types of interests on Famcraft. Often,  players get very busy with their own projects. There is never a guarantee your child will always be able to find someone ready to play.

14.) Are there a lot of group participation activities?

No, not on the server in general. Famcraft has a fairly free-style play environment. We do however have "clans" which are like little clubs or groups of players who often do clan-related things together.

15.) My child can only play occasionally. Will their items be removed if they do not log in for an extended period of time?

Nope. We never consider anything on Famcraft to be abandoned. We always assume everyone will be back.. eventually. So even if your child is offline for a year, they should return to find their home just the way they left it. They map is unlimited and we have no need to remove player's things.

16.) I heard this server has an economy. Does my child have to know how to use money to enjoy Famcraft?

Absolutely not. Some players disregard the economy entirely and play more similar to single-player vanilla style Minecraft. And for those who do want to participate in the economy parts of the game we offer simple jobs that pay you automatically as you play. We also offer a free daily allowance at /warp eco.

17.) Does my child have to put in a whitelist request? And what is a whitelist anyhow?

A whitelist allows us to control the flow of new players. This allows us to keep a comfortable staff:player ratio so we can take care of all our players. The whitelist if off for many hours each day. This means players can come and go freely most of the time. Being on the whitelist just gives you access to the server 24/7, even when the whitelisting is turned on. You can feel free to request that your child be whitelisted here: http://u.famcraft.com/6v

18.) I have two or more children who would need to share the same account or I would like to share an account with my child so I can help them learn to play. Is this possible?

Yes, as long as everyone with access to the account follows the rules, sharing an account is fine.

19.) What if I allow my child to try out Famcraft, and the server is not right for us.

Then we would encourage you to explore other options, and come back to Famcraft if you ever want to give it another shot.

20.) I still have questions. Is there a way I can speak directly with a staff member before I allow my child to play here?

Sure! Just join the server and ask to speak with a staff member. We can chat with you in a semi-private channel and answer any questions you may have.

Info for Parents / My Kid Got Banned?! Impossible!
« on: January 27, 2016, 04:34:46 PM »
What? Your child was banned?? You can always visit the plea section of the forum to learn about being unbanned.. but wait... maybe first you should keep reading.

But.. but kids are PERFECT. Perfectly capable of convincing us they can do no wrong. But they can. And when they do, as long as it was nothing too bad and not a repeat offence, we can usually give them another shot to follow the rules here on Famcraft.

So your kid is banned. Now what?

Before you do anything else, we highly suggest you go over the rules: http://u.famcraft.com/7f  with your child to see if something "stands out" for them. We REALLY value honesty here so this is a very important first step.

Please do not start out by assuming your child was banned for "nothing". Afterall, you allowed your child to play on this server for some reason. We do enforce the rules here.

Also, please remember the people who are here working to keep your child safe are not on a pay-roll. These are volunteers who actually care about the happiness and safety of the players on this server. For this very reason, all players are held accountable for their actions.

Another thing to keep in mind is we don't use your child's age as an excuse. We would never say "Little Timmy0175 can't participate in our build competition because he is just too young to understand the rules."
So in turn, we ask that you not tell us that your child is too young to follow the basic rules we have here at Famcraft. If you sincerely feel your child is too young for the rules, then they may not be ready for a multiplayer server.

While we do have a plea section where you, as a parent, are welcome to inquire about your child's ban, we highly recommend having your child write their own plea.
We frequently have parents plea for players who were able to communicate very well for themselves in game chat.
If at all possible, please give your child a chance to take responsibility for their actions and write their own plea, even if they need a little help. We have a lot of respect for players who are honest and make the effort to be accountable for their actions.

Ready to look into the plea process? You can find the section for posting a plea right here: http://u.famcraft.com/1y

Info for Parents / The Rules - Simplified "But Whhhyyyy?" Edition
« on: January 27, 2016, 04:06:02 PM »
The Rules on Famcraft may look difficult and complicated at first glance. A closer look will prove that most of the rules here are common courtesy. Be kind to others, keep your chat nice, don't steal, don't break other player's things. It's all very simple if you look at what the rules say, and think about why we might have each rule.

This is a very simplified version of our core rules, and why they exist.

1.) NO griefing or stealing.

*Parents-  "Griefing" is the act of interacting with other's players items or spaces without their permission- things such as breaking blocks in another player's area, placing blocks in another player's area, harvesting another player's crops or killing another player's animals are considered griefing.
This ALSO means when players harvest crops at the free-to-use public farm, they need to make sure they replant what they take so everyone can share.
"Stealing" is the act of taking something from another player or their area without permission.
Nothing on Famcraft is ever considered "abandoned". Anything you see here belongs to someone so please do not break it, take it, add to it or change it in any way.

To help everyone understand a little more about griefing, Here are some of the things that count as griefing-

* Removing any block another player placed without that player's permission

*Placing a protection stone in another player's area

*Harvesting another player's crops without their permission

*Killing another player's animals without their permission

*Claiming/protecting another players pet without permission (Example: taming a wolf, protecting a horse)

*Removing/changing landscape features in another players "yard" (What is directly visible from their home)

*Placing blocks in another player's area without permission

*Taking items from another player's chest without permission (Stealing/griefing)

*Keeping a players items after PvP if you did not agree to at first (Stealing)

*Not replanting at public/shared/clan farms

*Leaving any locked item such as a chest, furnace or pet in another player's space or a public location

But whhhyyyy?

Because it isn't nice to grief or steal. :( This is a survival server. All players work hard for their blocks and items here. They earn them and they want their things to be safe. You will want your things to be safe here too and thanks to this rule- they will be.  8)

2.) No swearing.

This means absolutely no bad words here. We have a filter that will block bad words and "spam".

But whhhyyyy?

Because Famcraft is very family friendly! We have all ages of players on this server from around 4 years old all the way to 80+. No one  here wants to see any bad words in chat.

3.) Don't talk about any mature or negative things here or anything that tends to stir heated debates.

*Parents - This means we avoid topics like politics, religion, drugs, alcohol, racism and "mature" themed topics.
This rule includes no discussion of  teen/mature rated tv shows, movies or video games. Do not talk about any of these things in public message, private message, in books or on signs. Also, please do not wear a skin that directly reflects any such topic.

But whhhyyyy?

Because here at Famcraft we like to keep chat upbeat, happy and friendly. We all get enough negativity out in the real world. Famcraft is where we come to relax and play a fun game together. We don't want any heavy conversations causing arguments or bringing down the mood of the community.
We know friendly debate over popular topics can be fun, but here we would much rather enjoy the things we have in common than to debate the things we disagree on. Keep chat happy and fun!  8)

4.) Don't post links in chat or message.

 But whhhyyyy?

We like to make sure to keep chat 100% clean, safe and family friendly. It's never a good idea to click on random links. You never know what you might accidentally see or download that you do not want. Because of this we prefer to keep ALL links out of chat.

5.) Do not discuss other servers while you are on Famcraft- at all.

But whhhyyyy?

Famcraft is very strictly moderated. We take our rules seriously and we do everything we can to keep our players safe and sound. If  someone discusses another server in chat, other players might visit that server. Famcraft has NO control over what type of rules or chat other servers might have. Even if you think another server is fun and safe, please do not mention it here on Famcraft.

6.) Do not use any cheaty mods.

*Parents- "Mods" are client side add ons or modifications that players can install on their game to provide them with additional benefits such as being able to fly in a world where other player's can not fly.
Another type of mod makes it so a player can press a key to see through the ground and easily find diamonds and ores.
Other mods provide extra features like super-high jumping. We do not allow any mods like this. These mods are very simple to find and very easy to install. Don't underestimate a child's ability to do this sort of thing. Kids are smart! This rule is important to mention.

But whhhyyyy?

On Famcraft we like to keep all play fair. Famcraft is a level playing field for players of all ages and skill-sets.
It's not fair at all if one player can look through the ground to find all the diamonds first, while another player flies or super jumps to explore the map faster and better while the other players who are playing legit get left behind. Please play fair. We DO allow some non-cheaty mods like Optifine, Minimaps and Inventory Tweaks.

7.) Don't intentionally bother other players.

*Parents- This means be respectful of other players and their spaces at all times. It also means there may be times a player needs to accept a simple "no" as an answer. For example, PlayerA asks to visit PlayerB, and PlayerB says "No, I am busy right now". Then PlayerA should accept that reply, and find something else to do. PlayerA should NOT send repeated teleport requests or complain that PlayerB said no. This also means players should not "nag" one another to join their clan, share their items or anything else. A simple "no" or "no thank you" should always be respected and left at that.

But whhhyyyy?

Because players come here to play and relax. Everyone needs alone-time somtimes. Just because some one may not be very talkative or may not feel like playing sometimes does not mean they do not like you. It just means they may need a little space. Also, begging players for items or pleading with them to do something with or for you makes for uncomfortable chat for everyone.  :-[ So always be polite and remember, you may have a day when you need some space too.

8.) Don't ask for free stuff.

But whhhyyyy?

Here at Famcraft we ALL work hard for our items. Even the staff team plays fair here. We try to make it easy for you to get the things you need to survive. We have a few free farms that will let you collect food and logs in a safe mob-free area. Please play fair and earn your own items just like the rest of us do. It's fun!  :)

9.) No spamming.

*Parents- On Famcraft, four or more of the same character in a row is considered "spam". The filter WILL block this and alert your child. While we do not usually ban for regular spam, we do warn for it, and we do ask that players use some self-control to avoid spamming. Example- "Noo!!! A Creeeper!!!" is fine, but the filter will block "Noooo!!!! A Crrrreeeeper!!!!" We do not allow spam because if we did, chat would be almost unreadable when we have 30+ players on all at once.

But whhhyyyy?

Because spam can make chat look very cluttered. It can be really hard to pick our the important information in chat if everyone is adding lots of extra letters to their sentences. It looks very messy!

See? Notice how below, it's hard to focus on the words "Please follow the rules"? We don't want chat to look like this.

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiii Welllllcome to Famcraft! Yaaaaaaaayyyyy!!! We're SOOOOOOO glad to have you here!!!!!!!!!!!
Please follow the rules.
EEEEeeeekkkkk!!!!Did you EVEN see that creeper?????? He was sooooo creeeeeeeeepyy! YIKES!!!!!!
IKR??????
ZZZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzZZZZZZ Can everybody SLEEEEEP pleeeeeeaassee???????

10.) Don't ask to be staff.

*Parents- We know many kids have only the best of intention when they ask to be staff on Famcraft, however, we do ask that player's understand our staff team is very carefully hand selected by our Famstaff admin team. Asking to be staff breaks one of the rules we expect potential future-staff members to be able to follow.

But whhhyyyy?

Famcraft is VERY picky about who we select for our FamStaff team. We do not ask very new players to join the staff team. We also do not ask players who do not follow the rules. This includes the rule about not asking to be staff. We very rarely add new members to the staff team. When we do, it can take us weeks or even months to select the person who best fits the team. Try not to focus too much on wanting to be staff and just try to enjoy your time here as the best player you can be.  8)

11.) English ONLY in public chat.

*Parents-  There are so many beautiful languages in the world. I know it can sound unfair that we can only allow one of them in public chat, but this is for the sake of thorough and proper moderation of chat. We have a large and active staff team, but the majority of us primarily speak English. This means if a player joins the server swearing in another language.. we may not know what is being said until we stop and research it. Clearly, this would not be not be ideal on a family friendly server. So we do ask for English only in public chat. Players are welcome to use other languages in /msg.

But whhhyyyy?
Because our staff team primarily speaks English and we need to be able to properly moderate chat to keep players safe.

12.) PvP is ONLY allowed if ALL players involved agree to the terms of the fight first.

*Parents- by the "terms" of the fight we mean players should agree on all the important details such as what type of armor to wear- if any, what types of weapons to use, and most importantly- when someone dies, who gets to keep the items in their inventory? These details matter.

But whhhyyyy?

Because we play fair on Famcraft. It only takes a minute to agree on what type of armor, what type of weapons, and who gets what after the fight. Knowing what to expect makes pvp fun and friendly.

 Welcome Parents!

We realize many parents are brand new to the world of online Minecraft multiplayer servers, but even when you're not new to the game joining a new community can have it's own set of challenges. We know in today's fast paced world it can be hard to find time to do the research and learn what's what. We hope this section will help cover some of our player's parents questions and concerns.

Other areas of the forum may have more advanced and more detailed information, so please feel free to explore the rest of the forum as well.  8)

Famcraft Survival / Apologies for the extended downtime
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:59:17 AM »
I have been hearing there was extended downtime with no connect-ability to any of the Famcraft survival/temp creative servers early this AM. I am uncertain as to why this occurred as when I woke up there were no updates from the Admin team. It's safe to assume they were still working on the server at that time. I wish I had more info, but I do not. I am very sorry to those who came to play and found Famcraft inaccessible.

I do not know how the work on the servers went. I can only guess the 1.8 work went fine as I do see the 1.8 survival server is up and running rock-solid. I am not sure where 1.7 is, but hopefully it will be back up and running later. We will let the admins get some sleep and after that, maybe they'll have time to update us.

Thanks for all your patience, Famcrafters. We are lucky to have you all here. <3

Famcraft Survival / Rollback - 1/15/2016
« on: January 15, 2016, 03:13:44 PM »
The 1.8 survival server located at survival.famcraft.com was rolled back approximately 18 hours. This rollback effected both player data and map data.

Unfortunately, last night- Jan 14, 2016,  the cooling system went out on the server  hardware that houses Famcraft survival. As a result, the server overheated causing some date to be corrupted.
This was not within out control. The hardware is located at a data-center so we were not aware of the issue until the server crashed. Sadly, there was nothing we could have done to prevent this. All of our hardware is well maintained and cared for. It was a very random occurrence. Even though it was out of our control, we are very sorry for any and all inconvenience caused to our players.

We do take backups frequently throughout the day and we do have good backups from immediately BEFORE the crash. We did not realize the extent of the damage to map and player files until this morning (1/15/2016). As soon as we noticed there was more damage than we had anticipated, we restored the server using the most recent backups (again, from immediately before the crash).

This means anything done on the survival.famcraft.com 1.8 survival server between the hours of approximately 7:00 pm central 1/14/2016 and 12:00 pm (noon) on 1/15/2016 was lost. ONLY things done between these hours should be effected.

If you built anything really large during this time and you find that it is now gone, please contact an admin and we will see if we can restore the area- we will try- but we can't make any promises.

This is NOT  a common occurrence on Famcraft. We will be 4 years old  in April and  we have never seen a rollback of this magnitude before (and hopefully will not again!). This was random hardware failure and not something anyone should worry about happening frequently.

Again, we are very sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you all for your patience. You are all amazing players and we know we're lucky to have you.

General Discussion / Let it SNOW!!
« on: November 24, 2015, 12:34:52 PM »
  ❆

It's snowing on Famcraft- and YOU can help!

Famcrafter's are as varied as unique as wonderful wintery snowflakes! We are asking YOU to help us make it snow! We have a special area set up through a limited-time StarGate at /warp SG, or via /warp snowflakes. This region includes the ability to FLY so you can build way up high in the air :D *Note: You will NOT be able to place on the ground- only in the air.

We need Famcrafter's to help build beautiful snowflakes. As a thank-you for your help, everyone who participates will get to wear a single white snowflake after their name, all throughout the winter holiday season! A few random creations may be selected for display at /spawn <3

Participation is easy and the rules are simple!

1.) Tell an Admin you would like to participate! You can post in this thread, contact and Admin in game, or submit a help request here: http://tools.famcraft.com/request-an-admin/

2.) Visit /warp SG and take the gate on the right OR go directly to /warp snowflakes

3.) Read the rules posted there

4.) Collect your supplies :o (Read the signs!) The snowflake world has a separate inventory, so the blocks you acquire there do not return to the main world with you.

5.) Build a snowflake! :D *Snowflakes ONLY - ONE per player, please
❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆ ❆

Feel free to build off of a free, glowstone block for a starting place. Do NOT build off of other player's snowflakes.
* In the event of parent/child or siblings sharing accounts, please feel free to each build your own snowflake.

6.) Place a sign with your name on your snowflake if you like.

Snowflakes will remain on display at /warp snowflakes year round, but building participation is for a limited time only.

*This is NOT a contest. No prizes will be given. This is strictly a for-fun event.
