The IRC network that we use has many servers all connected to each other. When the server you are on disconnects from the server that other people are on, it "netsplits", and the other person "disconnects" with a *.net, *.split message. When the network re-connects, they will "reconnect" to the channel. The other person will see it as you who disconnects from their channel.
